There’s something about early May that always makes me suspicious.
On the surface, everything seems fine and orders are pouring in. Discussions are moving forward, and nothing seems urgent.
And that’s exactly the problem.
I’ve been in this situation before, sitting at this very window, thinking I still had time before summer really kicked into high gear. That’s not the case.
I run my business on my own, so if I stop, everything comes to a halt.
More calls. More deliveries. More revenue generated in real time.
And for a long time, I just accepted that as part of the deal.
Because the reality is, it’s not just me who takes time off—everyone else does, too.
So, it’s not just that I’m taking a break… it’s that when I come back, I can’t seem to get back into the swing of things. I run into a wall.
If you have a team of 3 to 5 people, chances are you won’t be operating at full capacity all summer long. Vacation schedules overlap. You might even decide to close down completely for a while.
But what happens during this break?
Prospects keep coming in.
Customers always have questions.
Opportunities don’t just stop because you’ve set up an out-of-office reply.
Either they are dealt with… or they quietly go elsewhere.
It’s not free time that’s the problem.
It’s the lack of planning around it.
So this year, I see the beginning of May as the moment when I either make things easier for myself going forward… or create a problem for myself that I’ll have to deal with later.
If I were to disappear for two weeks, what would actually keep running without me?
I've started setting up the basics. Nothing complicated, and I'm automating the obvious steps:
💡 Emails I don’t have to send manually
💡 Content that keeps appearing even when I’m not there
💡 Lead generation and management
I make sure I don't rely on being "connected" every day just to keep things running smoothly.
And then comes the slightly harder part: looking at the places where things might simply… come to a halt.
💸 Where a prospect arrives and stays.
💸 Where a conversation needs a nudge that never comes.
💸 Where a customer waits, and no one steps in.
That's where the real cost lies.
If you own a small business, now is the perfect time to take care of it.
I’m not trying to build a perfectly automated system; I’m just trying to make sure that when things slow down… they don’t come to a complete stop.
Most people won’t think about it for several weeks, but by then, the process will already be underway.
In all honesty, what really happens at your company if you take two weeks off in July?
